Dry Brush Technique – How to Achieve a Vintage Effect?

In our previous post Vintage Effect with Newcolours Paint, we described several simple methods to achieve an aged furniture look. Now, it’s time to take a closer look at one of them – the Dry Brush Technique.

This is one of the easiest and most effective ways to add characteristic distressing and texture to furniture without using wax or sanding.

🎥 Watch the video and see how, in just a few simple steps, you can give your furniture a unique vintage look!

What is the Dry Brush Technique?

The dry brush technique involves applying a minimal amount of paint to the furniture surface in a way that highlights textured elements, carvings, and the natural grain of the wood. This method is perfect for achieving an aged look without sanding or waxing.

This effect works beautifully in vintage, shabby chic, and farmhouse styles, adding distinctive depth and texture to your furniture.

How to Paint with a Dry Brush? – Step by Step

This technique is incredibly simple and doesn’t require any special tools. All you need is a good brush, high-quality paint, and a bit of patience!

🔹 1. Choose Your Paint and Tools
The best paints for the dry brush technique are: Newcolours Iced Coffee Brown and Newcolours Custard Yellow.

You will also need: ✅ A natural bristle brush (can be slightly stiff).
✅ A paper towel or a cotton cloth to remove excess paint.

🔹 2. Apply a Small Amount of Paint to the Brush
Dip just the tips of the brush into the paint – a tiny amount is enough!

🔹 3. Remove Excess Paint
Before applying the paint to your furniture, wipe off the excess paint by dabbing the brush onto a paper towel or a dry cloth. The brush should be almost dry.

🔹 4. Lightly Paint the Surface
Apply the paint with light, short strokes in one direction – preferably following the wood grain. Do not press the brush too hard!

🔹 5. Build Up the Effect
If you want a more pronounced aged look, apply another layer, but always start with a thin coat of paint.

Why Use Newcolours Paints for This Technique?

Chalk Effect Without Chalk Paint
Newcolours Upcycling Paints are acrylic, but their formula allows for a chalk paint effect without the need for additional wax or lacquer.

Quick Drying
The paint dries in just 30 minutes, so you can quickly apply additional layers and experiment with the vintage effect.

Perfect for Creative Techniques
Thanks to their high pigmentation, Newcolours Iced Coffee Brown and Custard Yellow work great for: 🔹 Dry brushing
🔹 Wiping techniques
🔹 Sock painting
